Fiji Met issues strong wind warnings, anticipates weather to worsen

Fiji’s Weather Office has issued strong wind warnings and heavy rain alert for parts of the country and warns that conditions will likely turn for the worse countrywide from Thursday.

In their latest update, the Fiji Meteorology office issued warnings of strong winds for land areas of the eastern half of Vanua Levu, the Lau Group, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands.

Strong winds with an average speed of 50km/hr will be experienced in these areas likewise rain, with a few thunderstorms, as the combined result of tropical depression TD04F, located off New Caledonia and another located east of Vanuatu.

As is, winds experienced may cause big trees to sway and twigs breaking off trees. Wind strength is expected to pick up towards the latter half of the week when the lows are expected to merge and possibly become a tropical cyclone.

Heavy rain in and near these areas as well is expected to cause flash flooding of low lying regions. Accordingly, flash flood alerts have been issued for these areas as well as along the costal areas of Viti Levu from Serua to Togalevu and from Ba to Rakiraki.
