Fiji’s National Disaster Management Office confirmed two people died during the height of severe Tropical Cyclone Yasa impacting more than 93,000 people and a preliminary estimate of damage placed the cost at more than $100 million.
NDMO Director Vasiti Soko said one person died in the West and one in the North, and that they were awaiting Ministry of Health to confirm how they died.
Soko also announced two separate curfew protocols for today – effective from 5pm until 6am tomorrow in Vanua Levu. For the rest of Fiji, from 8pm to 5am. COVID-19 curfew timing between 11pm and 4am daily resumes from Saturday evening.
Public transportation and businesses have also been given the go-ahead to operate but with due diligence as authorities are still to determine the extent of the damage.
Tropical Cyclone Yasa has been downgraded further to a category three system as it continues in its path over Lau waters. In its current track, TC Yasa is expected to weaken further to a category two system tomorrow, before it dissipates.
