Heavy Rains Prompt Flooding and Road Closures in Central Fiji, Public Urged to Take ‘Extreme Caution’

July 17, 2025

Some roads in Fiji’s Central Division have been closed, and others are operating at limited capacity as heavy localised rainfall continues to cause flash flooding.

Authorities are urging the public to take “extreme caution” and avoid unnecessary travel, especially in flood-prone areas with rain expected to persist over the next 24 to 48 hours.

In a public advisory issued this morning, the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) warned that persistent rain over the last few days has saturated the ground, increasing the risk of both flash flooding and landslides.

“Members of the public are strongly urged to avoid travelling into flood-affected areas unless necessary,” the statement read.  “Doing so not only puts your life at risk but may also hinder emergency response efforts.”

The latest update from the FRA listed a number of major roads either fully closed or reduced to single-lane access.

Among the worst affected are:
– Savu Road (Naitasiri) – Some Sections Restricted to one lane
– Kings Road – Closed to all Traffic
– Naidiridiri Road 1 – Closed
– Waituri Road – Closed
– Waila Road – Closed
– Railagi Road Bridge – Closed
– Logani Sebi Crossing Baulevu – Closed
– Wainibuku Road – Restricted to one lane
– Vishnu Deo Road – Accessible to 4×4 vehicles
– Qiolevu Road – Restricted to one lane
– Wainibuku Road – Restricted to one lane
– Duilomaloma Road – Restricted to one lane
– Vusuya Road – Some Sections Restricted to one lane
– Vuci South Road – Some Sections Restricted to one lane

The FRA has advised the public to report any road infrastructure damage and to avoid driving in flooded or partially submerged areas.

Authorities are calling on residents to prepare for further rainfall and to prioritise safety, especially in vulnerable or flood-prone communities.

Those in need of assistance are encouraged to contact the Fiji Police Force or the National Fire Authority (NFA). Emergency response agencies remain on standby.

The public is advised to monitor official weather and road updates and support elderly or disabled neighbours who may need help relocating or accessing supplies
