Inosi Kuridrani To Be Sworn in as MP Ahead of Budget Debate

July 14, 2025

Inosi Kuridrani is expected to be sworn into Parliament today, replacing the late Agriculture Minister Vatimi Rayalu, ahead of the second reading and debate of the 2025–2026 national budget.

Kuridrani, who confirmed that he was ready to assume the role, is listed among the 53 Members of Parliament scheduled to speak in response to the budget over the next three days.

His name appears on the batting order for Wednesday, the final day of debate, where he is one of nine MPs listed to speak before Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad delivers his right of reply.

Kuridrani, who received 1,553 votes in the 2022 general election under the People’s Alliance banner, previously served in Parliament from 2018 to 2022 with SODELPA.

His expected return to Parliament comes as MPs debate on the $4.83 billion national budget. The Finance Minister will formally move for the second reading of the Appropriation Bill this morning, setting the stage for three days of deliberations.

Opposition Leader and Shadow Minister for Finance Inia Seruiratu will lead the response, followed by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka. Eighteen other MPs are scheduled to speak today, with 24 more on Tuesday.

The budget was announced on June 27, focusing on a number of things including easing the cost of living, enhancing public services, and addressing emerging issues including drug and rising HIV infections. It includes major investments in education, health, infrastructure, and targeted tax relief — including a reduction in VAT from 15% to 12.5% starting next month.

However, the plan also introduces a wider deficit of $886 million and projects a decrease in overall tax revenue. A range of new enforcement measures and borrowing strategies have been proposed to help finance the shortfall.

Kuridrani’s swearing-in follows the formal notification of the vacancy by the Speaker of Parliament and confirmation by the Electoral Commission that the next eligible candidate had accepted the role.

Rayalu, a respected advocate for rural communities and farmers, passed away last month, on June 12, after a short illness.

Kuridrani’s return brings the People’s Alliance representation in Parliament back to full strength as the Coalition Government prepares to defend its largest budget yet.

Parliament proceedings will begin today at 10.30am.
