The Lakeba Sub Divisional hospital which was opened in 1969 today celebrated its 55th anniversary.
To mark the special occasion, the Marama na Vuanirewa and Radini Naisogolaca Adi Koila Nailatikau acknowledged the doctors, nurses and medical officials who serve the people of Lakeba.
Adi Koila paid tribute to past medical officers who began the work on the chiefly island.
“This hospital was opened in 1969 the same year that the Turaga Bale na Tui Nayau sa Bale was installed also and now 55 years late we are celebrating it, the same year we are installing the new Turaga Bale na Tui Nayau.”
“I remember that during Christmas the late Turaga Bale na Tui Nayau would tell us to bring fish and food for the doctors, nurses and medical officials here because that was how much he valued and cherished them. “
“The late Turaga Bale na Tui Nayau studied for 6 years at Oxford before Turaga na Talai Ratu Sukuna called him to come back to Fiji and enter politics.”
“This is a special moment. This hospital services so many islands and people and I thank you sincerely for all that you do.”
Adi Koila then proceeded tour the hospital wards and speak briefly with patients and staff.
