After finishing high school in New Zealand and surrounded by immense rugby talent and limited pathways forward, Caleb Muntz wasn’t confident he’d make it as a professional player.
The 26-year-old, who attended Hamilton Boys’ High School, seriously considered stepping away from the sport.
“When I finished school, I was ready to give up rugby. There weren’t many opportunities, and honestly, I was okay with that. I was planning to become an engineer.”
Everything changed in 2018 when he received the call-up to join the Fiji U20s squad, an opportunity he describes as a “lifeline.”
“Fiji Rugby, especially the U20s, were the ones that gave me a lifeline. They gave me the chance to continue my rugby.” he said.
With paternal ties to Savusavu, Muntz sees that moment as a turning point, a reminder that when opportunity knocks, you take it.
“From the U20s, I worked my way into the main squad. It always reminds me that life could’ve taken a different turn, I might never have played the game I loved growing up.”
“Every time I play for my country, I put on the jersey for Fiji, I remember that when you’re given a chance, you make the most of it.”
Following his U20s stint, Muntz represented the Fiji Warriors in 2019 and joined the Drua in the National Rugby Championship that same year. By 2022, he officially signed with the Fijian Drua Super Rugby squad.
Now, after concluding his 2025 season with the Drua, Muntz has signed with French Pro D2 side Provence, preparing for the next chapter of his professional journey.
