Sireli Maqala has extended his contract with Aviron Bayonnais until 2030, a huge step for the Fijian utility back who joined the Top 14 club in 2021 after winning Olympic gold in Tokyo.
The 25-year-old, who has become one of Bayonne’s most consistent performers, scored 11 tries in 20 matches this season and has impressed with his versatility across wing, centre, and fly-half.
Maqala’s re-signing comes as he is also named in the Flying Fijians’ 32-man squad for the upcoming July Test matches against the Wallabies in Newcastle (July 6) and Scotland in Suva (July 12).
It marks a significant moment for the former sevens star, who has firmly established himself in the 15s game and remains one of Fiji’s most exciting attacking options under head coach Mick Byrne.
Maqala is joined in the Bayonne ranks by fellow Fijian Luke Tagi, who was also in contention for the national squad but has been ruled out of the July Tests due to an ankle injury. Tagi will remain in France to undergo rehabilitation.
