Opposition MP Urges “Budget Rooted in Reality” Ahead of Fiji Budget Announcement

June 24, 2025

Fiji’s Opposition MP Jone Usamate has called on the Coalition Government to deliver a national budget that reflects the “lived reality” of Fijians, calling for transparency and clarity in its financial policies.

Ahead of the budget address on Friday, the Coalition’s third since taking office, Usamate raised concerns over the country’s preparedness to handle potential global economic shocks, including rising energy prices linked to tensions in the Middle East.

His comments also come on the back of growing fears that the escalating Israel-Iran conflict could disrupt global oil supplies, with reports suggesting Iran may move to close the Strait of Hormuz—a key maritime route for oil exports.

“What steps are being taken to prepare for rising global energy prices, especially if tensions escalate in the Middle East and shipping costs spike?” Usamate asked, directing his question to Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad.

He also sought clarity on the country’s real versus nominal GDP figures since 2014 and called for clear plans to raise wages and reduce living costs.

“This is not about political gain. It is about fiscal truth,” Usamate said. “Budgets are not branding exercises. They are moral contracts. And if this government will not speak plainly to the people, then it must be prepared to answer for what it chooses to say—and what it chooses to leave out.”

The national budget will be presented in Parliament at 10am on Friday. The budget debate is scheduled for July 14-18.
