Flying Fijians Captain Waisea Nayacalevu has announced his retirement from international rugby.
Via a Fiji Rugby Union press statement today, Nayacalevu said the decision to retire had not been an easy one.
“This is not an easy decision — because rugby has been more than just a game to me. It’s been my passion, my purpose, and my teacher. It has taken me around the world, allowed me to form lifelong bonds, and given me the honor of standing shoulder to shoulder with warriors who bleed for this nation.”
Flying Fijians Head Coach Mick Byrne acknowledged Nayacalevu’s service and contribution to Fiji rugby.
“Waisea has been an inspirational captain for many years. Leading them through a successful 2023 RWC. It was a pleasure to work with Waisea over the past season. He was very supportive and a strong voice for the players. He will be surely missed within the playing the group. I woukd like to extend my best wishes to Waisea and his family with their move to Neice in France.”
The Serua man said the journey representing Fiji had been a phenomenal one.
“To my teammates — past and present — thank you. You have become my brothers. Thanks you very much for all the History breaking achievements we made and all the Losses that we learned from to make us better .We’ve shared sweat, pain, joy, and glory together. I’ll carry those memories forever.”
Nayacalevu recently ended short stints with both the Sale Sharks and Ospreys after an illustrious career with Top 14 side Toulon.
