Three men—one of whom is a serving police officer—are due to appear in the Nadi Magistrates Court today after authorities intercepted over four kilograms of methamphetamine at Nadi International Airport.
The arrests follow a joint operation between the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS) and the Fiji Police Force, which uncovered the drugs hidden in an airfreight consignment from a Southeast African nation. Customs officers reportedly detected irregularities during routine screening, prompting a full inspection that led to the discovery of several packets of the illicit drug.
A controlled delivery was carried out in the days following the seizure, culminating in the arrest of the three suspects. All three have been charged with unlawful importation of illicit drugs. The second and third accused—identified by police sources as the officer and an associate—also face charges relating to the possession of suspected proceeds of crime.
In a statement, Fiji’s Commissioner of Police, Rusiate Tudravu, said the arrest of a police officer in connection with drug trafficking “reaffirms the zero-tolerance approach” of the force.
“I have directed a full-scale investigation to identify those colluding to advance the illicit drug trade in Fiji,” Tudravu said. “Fiji is not a haven for drug traffickers.”
FRCS Chief Executive Udit Singh commended the frontline officers and the continued cooperation between agencies.
“This interception is a direct result of the sharp intelligence, surveillance, and targeting capabilities of our Customs officers, and the strong partnership we continue to strengthen with the Fiji Police Force,” Singh said.
