Six Remote Fijian Schools Get High-Speed Internet

May 16, 2025

Six schools located in some of Fiji’s most remote areas have been connected to high-speed internet for the first time, as part of a government-led initiative to support e-learning in rural schools.

The installations were carried out by Lightspeed Fiji, the country’s first authorised Starlink reseller, which secured a government contract following a competitive tender process overseen by ITC Services.

The six schools — Nakorosule District School, Nawaisomo Primary, Naivucini District, Naboro Sawanikula Primary, Lewa SDA, and Natutale District School — are located in the interior of Naitasiri, Navosa, and Ba provinces, where internet connectivity has either been unreliable or entirely absent.

“All the schools installed had either no internet or very slow internet,” said Dovi Kanaimawi, General Manager of Lightspeed Fiji. “With Starlink, it now means all six schools have a minimum of 300 Mbps high-speed internet, which is much faster than most offices in Suva.”

The installations were completed in just three days, despite logistical challenges including poor weather, distance, and the rugged terrains.

The initiative is part of a Ministry of Education project led by Education Minister Aseri Radrodro, aiming to ensure rural students are not left behind in the digital age.

“This connectivity now allows teachers to connect to FEMIS and other cloud-based applications,” Kanaimawi said. “It also means that a pathway to future e-learning initiatives has been activated.”

Lightspeed has thanked the Government for its support in rolling out Starlink-powered connectivity to rural schools, describing the initiative as a significant step towards achieving global education standards in Fiji.
