Fiji Justice Minister Calls for Decorum After Acting Prison Commissioner Caught in Viral Bar Fight

May 5, 2025

Fiji’s Minister for Justice, Siromi Turaga, reminded public office holders to maintain decorum after a video surfaced showing the acting head of the prison service in a public altercation at a popular nightclub in Suva.

The viral footage appears to show Acting Commissioner of the Fiji Corrections Service, Sevuloni Naucukidi, in a fistfight with another man at O’Reilley’s Bar while bar staff attempted to de-escalate the situation.

Turaga confirmed in a statement today that he was made aware of the incident, and preliminary investigations indicate the video likely dates back to early March.

“We have contacted the owners of the establishment, who have confirmed that the video likely dates back to early March 2025. While we are yet to determine the exact date, we have sought verification from the relevant parties,” he said.

The incident, he said, serves as a reminder of the expectations placed upon public officers, particularly those in uniformed services.

“This serves as a reminder to all public office holders and civil servants that a certain level of decorum is expected at all times—particularly when in uniform, whether that be Bula Friday wear or your official work attire,” he said. “All officers are expected to behave responsibly during official hours and outside of official hours.”

A full report is now being awaited from the relevant parties, and Turaga is expected to provide an update to both the Constitutional Offices Commission (COC) and the Prime Minister once investigations are complete.

The Fiji Corrections Service falls under Turaga’s ministerial portfolio; however, the appointment and discipline of its Commissioner are within the authority of the COC, chaired by the Prime Minister.

The video was released weeks after Naucukidi was appointed acting prison commissioner, following Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa’s suspension in late March due to misconduct allegations. Naucukidi was officially inducted on March 30, with Turaga at the time expressing confidence in his ability to lead the service.

Today, Turaga reiterated that leadership comes with responsibility.

“While social interaction is part of our way of life, I urge everyone to remain mindful of their conduct and to uphold discipline at all times,” he said.
