Growing the sport of basketball, and continuing with the championing of the sport as a way of keeping young people involved in something worthwhile is part and parcel of why officials are pushing for the sport in Fiji.

And Basketball Fiji’s William Peter says that while many in Fiji were concentrating on sports like rugby, the association is confident that the basketball has a lot to give to young people in Fiji and that the sport will continue to grow.

“This issue has always been a challenge because first of all, securing proper venues is a huge disadvantage. With rugby, an open field is all you basically need but with sports like basketball you need a proper court, clear markings and a hoop.”

“We know that other sports are struggling too so we are committed to getting the work done and ensuring that basketball not only survives but becomes a force to reckon with in the future.”

Peters said that after a lapse of two years, the Vodafone Fiji Cup a national basketball tournament will take place from Thursday to Saturday this week in Suva.

The tournament comprises of 16 teams, 8 in each category and is being held at the FMF Gymnasium with tickets costing $5.
