New FRU board a lame duck as Trustees maintain control

February 2, 2025

Despite being elected and inducted into their positions in November 2024, new Fiji Rakavi Football Union board members say they are still powerless to make key decision on the affairs of the FRU.

They say this is because no proper handover has been made by the trustees and former interim board led by Peter Mazey.

Speaking at a press conference at the Fiji Rugby House yesterday, chairman of the new FRFU Limited John Sanday said the new board has been unable to carry out key official tasks as the Trustees have yet to finalise paperwork.

Sources tell Mai TV commercial contracts and hiring continue to be signed off by Peter Mazey and the CEO without board approval, which they claim is against FRU’s articles of association. They say this has been frustrating for the new board because the trustees still sign contracts and sponsorships without the directors input.

Sanday alluded to this at yesterday’s press conference.

“We were elected on November 9th and inducted on the 19th and while we’ve been working to get things rolling, the transfer of power from the trustees who were running things up to that point of our election has not been completed.”

Sanday said that while it was frustrating, they would work with the Trustees to ensure that proper documentation and processes are honored.

“It’s frustrating because there are some things we could have already done for the game in Fiji but we must also understand that proper procedures are followed.”

Sanday was replying to questions posed by member unions around the country asking why the new Board have yet to carry out any work since election.

“This is not about ego or personal ambition. It’s about getting the work done. We’re getting the work done. We’re giving up our time, our expertise, spend our own money to get things done because we want rugby in Fiji to move forward.”

Sanday said he was hopeful that work on the handover of powers at Rugby House will be completed soon.

“We are just waiting on those transfers to take place and we should be well on our way to getting the sport of rugby in Fiji up where it belongs.”

Mai TV called and sent questions to Mazey this morning but there was still no response as this story was published.
