Two workers were injured in a workplace incident at the FHL Tower construction site two days ago, prompting Fijian Holdings Limited (FHL) to postpone the building’s opening.
The 18-storey high-rise, located at the corner of Gordon Street and Thurston Street, was scheduled to open at the end of this year, according to local media reports.
However, in a statement issued today, the FHL confirmed the decision in light of the accident that occurred on November 25 and voiced their concern and support for the injured workers and their families.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected and their families during this difficult period,” FHL said.
The FHL Tower construction site is managed by the project’s main contractor. FHL has assured the public and shareholders that it is working closely with the contractor and relevant authorities to ensure “that due process is followed.”
Questions have been sent to FHL for further details about the incident or the condition of the injured workers. It remains unclear what caused the accident, but workplace safety protocols are expected to come under scrutiny as investigations continue.
A factsheet accessed online outlined that the project which began in June 2020 was expected to be completed in 2022 at a total cost of FJ$67 million.
