Residents Urged to Take Precautions as Fiji Met Issues Heavy Rain Alert

November 25, 2024

The Fiji Meteorological Office has issued a heavy rain alert for Yasawa, Mamanuca, Viti Levu, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, as well as the Lau and Lomaiviti groups, as a trough of low pressure remains slow-moving over the region.

The weather system is expected to bring periods of heavy rain and thunderstorms, with localised downpours possibly causing flash flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas. The trough is forecast to weaken by tomorrow, but its effects will linger, with occasional heavy rainfall continuing to impact parts of the country.

For areas under the alert, including Yasawa, Mamanuca, Viti Levu, Kadavu, and nearby islands, occasional heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected. For other parts of the Fiji group, occasional rain with isolated thunderstorms and heavy falls are likely.

The system is expected to result in localised flooding of flood-prone areas and minor roads, disruption to traffic flow due to flooding of low-lying crossings, and poor visibility for drivers and mariners.

The Fiji Met Office has urged caution, especially for those travelling in affected areas or planning marine activities.

Residents are advised to stay updated through official weather bulletins and take necessary precautions to ensure safety. The next weather update is scheduled for early tomorrow at 4:30 am or earlier if conditions change.
