Fiji Police Dismiss Coconut Drug Injection Rumors

November 25, 2024

Fiji Police has denied reports circulating about individuals injecting drugs into coconuts or ‘bu’ (young coconuts).

Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACP) Livai Driu assured the public that there is no evidence to support the claims.

ACP Driu said that the incident stemmed from a patrol by the Samabula operations team on Thursday, November 21, in the Namadi area. Officers were approached by a resident who reported two men acting suspiciously.

The men were located and searched along a footpath but no illicit items were found. ACP Driu noted that the individuals are known coconut sellers along Princess Road, which may have led to the speculation.

He reiterated that there was no basis for the reports and encouraged the public to verify such claims before sharing them. The Fiji Police urged people to use official communication channels to verify information or to report any concerns confidentially.
