The Fiji National University College of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry recently hosted aFundamentals of Soil Science training at Koronivia Campus, bringing together participants from Kiribati, Tonga, Samoa, and Fiji.
The training, led by soil science experts Dr Ivanah Oliver and Dr Chris Guppy from the University of New England (UNE), offered a comprehensive exploration of soil health, covering topics such as soil functions in both urban and rural landscapes, interactions of soil with water, carbon, and nutrients, and the impact of human activities on soil health and productivity.
Participants were given hands-on experience with modern field and laboratory techniques, equipping them with practical skills to assess and manage soil conditions effectively.
This event highlighted the importance of soil science in tackling environmental challenges, and the involvement of FNU’s staff and students further cemented ties within the Pacific soils network, promoting unity among emerging and established soil scientists.
The training has also provided a platform for sharing knowledge and strategies especially at a time when Pacific islands face increasing environmental pressures. The connections built during the workshop are expected to drive long-term collaboration.
