September 19, 2024

Five people, including May 2000 coup leader George Speight and 2nd November 2000 mutiny leader Shane Stevens, have been granted presidential pardons, along with five others, following a review by Fiji’s Mercy Commission.

The Mercy Commission met yesterday and pardoned Sekina Vosavakatini, Nioni Tagici, Adi Livini Radininausori, and John Miller. James Sanjesh Goundar was also granted a pardon but passed away earlier this month while still in custody.

The Commission recommended granting pardons to His Excellency, the President of Fiji, under Section 119(5) of the Constitution. These pardons were officially granted on 18 September 2024.

A statement from the Fiji Corrections Office stated that the named individuals were officially discharged from custody on Thursday, 19 September 2024.

“The Fiji Correction Service and the government remain committed to the principles of justice, rehabilitation, and the rule of law, and the Mercy Commission plays a vital role in ensuring that petitions for clemency are considered carefully, with due regard to the circumstances of each case,” the statement read.
