COVID19 case confirmed

Fiji’s first case of COVID19 was confirmed in Lautoka this morning, the patient, a 28 year old male, who is now in isolation.

Minister of Health Dr. Ifereimi Waqainabete confirmed the case this hour via his twitter account and said the government was currently conducting tracing.

“There is a single confirmed case of COVID19 in Lautoka that was imported from a patient who had recently traveled abroad. He was immediately isolated, where he remains under careful medical supervision.

Sources indicate the patient was a flight attendant who presented to the Lautoka Hospital on March 18 with coughs, runny nose and sore throat.

While there are no locally transmitted cases in Fiji, the MOH says it is “vastly expanding containment measures.”

Department of Information officials say a public announcement concerning the confirmed case and new containment measures will be announced by Fijian Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama soon.
