The Fiji Coalition Government has announced plans to set up a new Waste Management Authority to improve how waste is handled across Fiji.

A feasibility study is being carried out, Minister for Trade Manoa Kamikamica said noting that the authority is aimed at centralising waste management efforts, making them more effective and environmentally friendly.

“This centralised body will enhance the efficiency of waste collection, recycling, and disposal across Fiji, supporting local governments and promoting environmental sustainability,” Kamikamica said.

The Western Landfill project will also play a major role, serving as a central waste disposal site in the Western Division. It will use advanced technology to treat waste and reduce its environmental impact.

The new authority is a part of the government’s commitment to improving waste management and supporting local communities. Alongside this, the government is reviewing the National Housing Policy to address housing needs with a focus on climate resilience and better urban planning.

Kamikamica added, “This policy is a major step forward in addressing Fiji’s housing challenges, focusing on affordable, safe, and sustainable housing for all. It integrates climate-resilient practices and aims to improve urban planning to ensure that every Fijian has access to decent housing.”

This move is part of a broader plan that includes upgrading public spaces like Ratu Sukuna Park.
