Fiji Rugby Flying Fijians Coach Recommendation Awaits World Rugby Approval

March 11, 2024

Former Fijiana Drua coach and former acting Flying Fijians head coach Senirusi Seruvakula is believed to be Fiji Rugby’s recommendation for the vacant Flying Fijians head coach’s job.

Reliable sources indicate that Rugby House suggested Seruvakula, who served in the role in an acting capacity from November last year until January this year.

However, World Rugby, a group of whom is expected in the country this week, will have the final say.

Confirming this, Chairman of the FRU Board of Trustees, Peter Mazey, states that compliance with World Rugby’s demands was necessary due to the previous FRU administration not adhering to the standards set by the world body. Without signing the understanding, Fiji risked exclusion from events like the Rugby World Cup, HSBC 7s series, and the Super Rugby competition.

“Because of what the previous FRU administration did we have had to abide by what World Rugby has demanded of us,” Mazey said.

“If we didn’t sign that understanding we would not have been allowed to play at the Rugby World Cup in France last year, we wouldn’t have been able to take part in the HSBC 7s series and our Fijian Drua would not have been able to play in the Super Rugby competition.”

Mazey added the Fiji public needs to understand facts behind decisions before making assumptions.

“We wish we didn’t have to do this but it’s out of our hands. This understanding was signed by the Attorney General, the Minister of Sports and other relevant stakeholders because we need to still be part of World Rugby and all the competitions.”

The names of the shortlisted candidates are with World Rugby as per the recruitment drive handled by Global Elite Sports Recruitment.
