Fiji’s Great Council of Chiefs is set to meet for the first time tomorrow with over 40 nominations, but only three women, constituting less than 7 per cent of the council.
Minister for iTaukei Affairs Ifereimi Vasu said the provinces were encouraged to nominate women to the GCC, but as of today, only three names had been received ahead of the council’s meeting at the Lagoon Resort, the GCC’s first since its reinstatement in November 2023.
The list of nominees is with the President, Tui Macuata Ratu Wiliame Katonivere for appointment as required under section 3(1) of the iTaukei Affairs Act.
As per the regulation, the GCC will then appoint a chairperson from amongst its members for a three-year term, eligible for re-election.
Vasu underscored the importance of the GCC meeting in a briefing held in Suva today, urging all Fijians to reflect on its role in society.
“It is a step forward ensuring that the voices of the iTaukei are heard and respected in the national dialogue,” Vasu said.
The announcement today comes on the heels of the cabinet’s endorsement of the iTaukei Affairs (Great Council of Chiefs) Regulations 2024 which sets out the selection process and criteria for the members of the GCC, its objectives, and responsibilities.
“As we prepare for this significant event, I invite all Fijians to join us in reflecting on the importance of the GCC, its role in our society, and [how] we can all contribute to a more united, prosperous, and culturally rich Fiji,” Vasu said adding that he was looking forward to fruitful discussions and outcome.
The iTaukei Trust Fund will cover the 2-day meeting costs totalling $191,000.
