Woman, 44, Charged in Back-To-School Assistance Misuse, Taxi Driver Arrested

A 44-year-old woman of Yavulo, Sigatoka has been charged with stealing school assistance funds from someone else’s MPAISA account.

Laisani Toni Batirerega is the fourth person charged by Fiji Police’s MPAISA Taskforce in relation to the Back-to-School Assistance Scam.

She is facing four counts of Obtaining Financial Advantage and one count of Possession of Property Suspected of being Proceeds of Crime.

It is believed that she committed the offence between January 8 and January 9 this year.

Batirerega appeared before a magistrate’s court in Sigatoka today. She was released on bail with two sureties and a $2000 bail bond. Batirerega is scheduled to return to court on April 9 for mention and has been advised to engage a Legal Aid Lawyer.

In a separate case, a 32-year-old Taxi Driver of Lot 10 Simplex Lane, Lautoka has been arrested for obtaining financial advantage.

He is accused of obtaining $700 while pretending to be a supermarket staff member selling groceries over the phone.

He will be produced before a magistrate’s court in Lautoka tomorrow.
