Flying Fijians captain Waisea Nayacalevu has publicly sought forgiveness after an incident during the post-match press conference following their narrow 23-24 loss to Portugal.
During the conference yesterday morning, he unintentionally used inappropriate language.
In a statement issued via Fiji Rugby, Nayacalevu said that this was not directed at any fan but rather at a Fijian journalist with whom he shares a traditional and bantering relationship known as “Tauvu.”
In his apology, Nayacalevu stated, “I would like to sincerely apologise for the incident. I’ll be honest with one and all. That phrase was directed towards my Fijian friend, “My Tau”, who is part of the Fijian media delegations covering the Rugby World Cup.
I was under the impression that the mic was disabled thus uttered it unintentionally for which I express my deep and utmost regret.”
Acknowledging the responsibility that comes with his role as the captain of the Flying Fijians, Nayacalevu said that his actions were not in line with the values of the game and sought forgiveness for the slip.
