May 4, 2023

The Fiji Warriors have started their World Rugby Pacific Challenge campaign in style with a convincing 72-15 victory over reigning champions Junior Japan at Apia Park in Samoa.

The Fijians dominated from the start, with a penalty by Jack Volavola in the opening minute, which was soon matched by Junior Japan’s Toshiki Omachi to level the scores at 3-3 in the 8th minute.

However, the Fiji Warriors quickly took control, with tries from Tevita Sabola, Isoa Vunisa, Maika Tutitubou, and Joseva Nasaroa crossing the try line in the 12th, 14th, 20th, and 40th minutes respectively. Fullback Jack Volavola converted all four tries, giving the Fijians a comfortable 31-3 lead at halftime.

The Fiji Warriors continued their dominance in the second half, scoring seven more tries, including a second for Vunasau. Despite a consolation try from Junior Japan’s Kanjiro Naramoto in the 80th minute, converted by Yoshiki Omachi, the Fijians sealed a resounding 72-15 victory.

Next up for the Fiji Warriors is a clash with the hosts, Manu Samoa, next Monday, May 8 at 3pm (Fiji Time). The Samoans also got off to an impressive start in their opening game yesterday, with a 69-7 victory over Tonga.
