January 17, 2023

Fiji Police will be looking into elements of negligence in four recent cases where three children died and the fourth is admitted to hospital with 13 percent burns.

The most recent case happened around 6 pm yesterday in which a two-year-old allegedly crossed the road “suddenly” near Natokowaqa Housing in Lautoka and was hit by a vehicle driven by a 32-year-old woman.

Two others died last week including an 8-year-old child who fell into a drain in Tacirua. Authorities have classified the child’s death as a drowning case. It was the second case of drowning reported that week after a one-year-old was reported to have drowned in a bucket of water in Nalawa, Ra.

The case of burns was reported in Ba. Police said the victim was allegedly left unattended in her home in Votua village when a jug of hot water fell on her.

Fiji Police Chief Operations Officer (COO) Acting Commissioner of Police Livai Driu said the accidents and deaths are unfortunate, calling on parents and guardians to prioritise the safety of their children at all times.
