Fiji Elections 2022: Vote turnout hovers below 50%

December 14, 2022

Voter numbers have picked up as of 3.30 pm but remain below 50 percent with less than two hours to the close of polls in Fiji’s 2022 General Elections.

In a 4 pm update, Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem said that 285,845 voters had already voted across 1321 polling stations across the country, for a turnout rate of 47.2 percent.

“As it is the numbers don’t look like we will surpass the figures in 2018,” he said.

“Unless all those Fijians around 400,000 of them who are still at home and haven’t voted step up to the polling stations and vote. Your voter card, your polling venue, the polling officials, your ballot paper and everything is waiting for you. The only thing left is for you to take that step and go and vote. The FEO is now urging every Fijian out there to use the next one hour and 50 or so minutes to please come out and vote. This opportunity comes every four years.”

On polling day in the previous election four years ago, Fiji recorded a turnout rate of 73.3%.

Polls close at 6pm or when the last voter in the queue has voted at 6pm.
