Five people including a toddler are still to be accounted for, one person is dead and another 7612 are sheltered in evacuation centres across the country as Tropical Cyclone Ana exits Viti Levu this afternoon.
The five missing persons include two fishermen from Cikobia, Vanua Levu who were reported missing on Wednesday, and two from Vatuwaqa, Suva who were reported missing Friday.
In their latest update, Fiji Met said that Ana was headed towards Kadavu and is expected to pass the island tonight, still a category two system, and track further to open sea where it is expected to weaken in two days before it dissipates in four days’.
Though a category two system, TC Ana not only caused a loss of life – one drowning causality – a 49-year-old man – associated weather events also caused landslides, flooding of low lying areas and coastal areas, damaged crops and vegetation and forced more than 200 evacuation centres to be opened in all four divisions.
One hundred and five (105) evacuation centres are opened in the North housing 4553 people, eight in the Eastern Division with 340 people, 16 in the Central Division with 189 and 75 in the Western Division with 2530 people.
For areas without power and water, National Disaster Management Office Director Vasiti Soko says Electricity Fiji Limited and Water Authority of Fiji will not mobilise teams until after TC Ana has passed.
