Former Bureau of Stats CEO defends HIES report

Former Fiji Bureau of Statistics CEO Kemueli Naiqama has spoken out for the first time since his dismissal stating that the 2019-2020 Household Income and Expenditure Survey report “is an honest, clear, and realistic snapshot of the poverty situation in Fiji made according to international accepted standards and categories, and nothing else.” He was responding to recent comments made by Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum questioning the credibility of the report, and describing it as flawed and against government policy that is “philosophically opposed to putting ethnicity and religion to poverty.” CLICK ON HEADLINE FOR MORE

COVID-19 Fiji: Deaths of COVID positive patients surpass 1000-mark

More than 1000 COVID-19 positive patients in Fiji have died during the outbreak after 10 more fatalities were announced for the 24-hour period ending at 8am yesterday. Of the 10, four were death from COVID and six death with COVID, taking the total number of people who have died from COVID in the current outbreak to 581 and the latter, 425 for a total of 1,006 deaths, and 1008 since March 2020. Increased vaccine uptake in children vaccination program

More than 11,000 children equating to nearly a quarter of the initial 15-17 age group target population have received their first dose of the Moderna vaccine within the first three days of the children's vaccination program. On 22 September, 4307 more children received their first jab taking the total number of children who are partially vaccinated to 11,409 since the program began Monday, 20 September. COVID-19 Fiji: Two border quarantine cases

Fiji recorded two border quarantine cases and its unclear at this stage whether they are included in the 177 new coronavirus infections reported for the 24 hour period that ended at 8am yesterday. The border quarantine cases involve a 20-year-old man from Nadi and a 22-year-old man from Lautoka who arrived in Fiji on a vessel via the Lautoka seaport on 19 September. Authorities say the duo did not disembark the vessel when it visited other seaports during the course of travel, but believe they may have picked up the virus through crew change at one of the ports.
