Zero cases, 7 recoveries and 98 contacts in 24 hours: Health

No new cases were recorded overnight, but there were seven recoveries, and intensive contact tracing works that identified 98 contacts of the two COVID19 positive doctors, some of whom are patients at the Lautoka Hospital. Fiji’s Permanent Secretary Health Dr James Fong said all of the contacts have been swabbed and entered into quarantine. The majority of the contacts are colleagues of the two doctors at the Lautoka Hospital whilst the patients were seeking treatment for other illnesses, and as such are deemed at high risk of being infected. Dr Fong admits the next two weeks will be demanding for hospital staff. CLICK ON HEADLINE FOR MORE

CSOs COVID19 response alliance urges for bipartisan approach in pandemic response

Fiji’s CSO Alliance for COVID-19 Humanitarian Response calls for a bipartisan approach in the country’s coronavirus response. In a statement released today, the group urged the Fijian Government to “soothe the pain of the people” by fronting up to explain their moving forward-plans which the group believes will be most effective if they include opposition leaders, CSOs, NGOs, experts, traditional leaders and an expert women’s safety advisor on the Incident Management Team (IMT). “We are all in this together, so let us find solutions together,” the CSO group said. “It is all our responsibility. This is not the time for individual aggrandizement and settling personal grudges. So let us forget our differences and come together as Fijians.” CLICK ON HEADLINE FOR MORE

Services at Lautoka Hospital will continue: Health

Fiji’s Permanent Secretary Health Dr James Fong says they have ‘sufficient leeway’ to ensure services at the Lautoka Hospital continue after two doctors who tested positive for coronavirus and their contacts, some of whom work in the hospital as well have been isolated and quarantined. Dr Fong said a team from CWM Hospital in Rakiraki who were initially deployed to help out at the Ba Hospital could be mobilised to Lautoka. They are also looking to call up doctors who normally work at the Lautoka Hospital, but have not been able to because they live outside the Lautoka containment zone. While at it, Dr Fong said investigations are ongoing to determine how the infection got there and what can be done to mitigate any further risk. “We are early into our investigation, but at this stage they do not appear to have any links to existing cases or events of interest, such as the Tavakubu funeral,” he said.
