Konrote resigns as Fiji’s PS Economy

Makereta Konrote has resigned as Fiji’s Permanent Secretary for Economy, effective from 15 March, citing new challenges. Konrote steps down after 18 years at the ministry, joining as a graduate trainee and departing as the PS, a position she held over the last five years. Shiri Gounder who currently heads the ministry’s fiscal policy unit will assume the role in an acting capacity from 16 March, according to a Fijian Government statement. CLICK ON HEADLINE FOR MORE

World Rugby 7s Series back this year, starting May

World Rugby 7s Series returns this year, but in a condensed yet highly impactful format featuring five women’s and four men’s rounds, with the addition of a further two potential men’s events under discussion. The 2021 Series kicks off with back-to-back women’s events in Marcoussis, Paris on 15-16 and 22-23 May. Hong Kong, Dubai and Cape Town will host joint men’s and women’s events. The Series will then take a break for the Olympic Games and recommence with a men’s event in Singapore on 29-30 October, followed by joint men’s and women’s rounds in Hong Kong on 5-7 November, Dubai on 3-4 December, and ends in Cape Town on 10-12 December. Fiji reports seven active COVID-19 cases

Fiji has seven active COVID-19 cases, all detected in border quarantine - three females and four males aged between 12 and 66 years - after four more overseas arrivals tested positive for the virus. Of the four new cases, two had arrived from India on the same flight on 24 February - a 42-year-old female and a 35-year-old - and the other two, a 12-year-old boy and a 55-year-old female arrived together a day later from Sacramento, USA.
