PM Bainimarama statement on TC Harold and COVID19

On the coronavirus front, we have reported zero new cases through the weekend. Friday night, we tested nine samples. Saturday night, another 10. Sunday, another 21, and last night another six. All have come back negative, making four straight days of zero new cases. Of our 649 tests to date, our total confirmed cases continue to stand 16, and all of these patients in stable condition. However, none have yet been cleared of the virus. Our present virus response is heavily targeted at three areas at high-risk of local transmission: The Nabua Settlement in Suva, the Soasoa settlement in the North, and Fijians under supervised quarantine in Nadi after returning from overseas. Australia provides COVID-19 assistance

The Australian government has contributed close to $FJD18 million towards the fight against COVID-19. In a press statement, Australian High Commissioner to Fiji, John Feaks commended the work of the Ministry of Health and Medical Services in their COVID-19 response. “I’ve been deeply impressed with the efforts made by the Fijian Government to reduce the spread of the virus in Fiji. Australia continues to work closely with the Fijian Government to support their efforts to respond to the significant challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic,” Commissioner Feakes said. The Australian government has committed $FJD15.4m to boost Fiji’s COVID-19 response efforts while $FJD1.5m was provided to the Ministry of Health and Medical Services and $FJD 299,000 to the Republic of Fiji Military Forces to assist in their response to COVID-19. Man swims across Rewa river, 117 break curfew

Fiji’s Police arrested 117 people overnight, among them a man who allegedly swam across the country’s widest river, in breach of lockdown orders. The man allegedly swam from Lokia, located on the Suva side of the lockdown, to Nadali on the other side of Rewa River. He was one of three people arrested for similar violation in the eastern division. Also in the same division, a police officer was among 28 arrested for breach of social gathering protocols. He was found playing rugby with a group of youths in Waila yesterday. The lone case of self-quarantine breach involves a man residing in Nadi who had recently returned from Canada.
