2 new COVID19 cases recorded as Fiji CDC resumes processing of tests

Two more people have tested positive for COVID19 in Fiji, and both tied to existing clusters, one in Nadali, Nausori and the other, from the recent Makoi cluster.

The latter had been in an isolation facility since 10 May while the new Nadali case had only been placed in isolation.

Contact tracing for both individuals is underway, Ministry of Health said in a statement.

Meanwhile, processing of COVID19 tests resume at the Fiji Centre for Disease Control tonight after the completion of decontamination works. All remaining staff has continued to test negative for COVID-19.

None of the laboratory staff have tested positive to date, which further indicates that the virus was brought in from the community, the ministry said.

Majority of the staff have chosen to remain at work at the CDC to continue running tests while others have been placed in quarantine facilities.

Those staying on to work will continue to be tested regularly during their sequestration period” so that any positive case can be identified and isolated early.”

The new cases bring to 50 the number of active cases, six of which are border quarantine cases. Of the 50 cases, 13 remain under investigation. Cases under investigation are considered as community transmission until proven otherwise.

Fiji has had 168 cases in total, with 114 recoveries and four deaths, since the first case was reported on 19 March 2020.
