Thirteen serious accidents were reported on Fiji roads from January 1 to 13, averaging one per day, raising concerns ahead of the school term in two weeks.
Of the 13 accidents, 11 were attributed to speeding and driver fatigue.
“We are concerned about the high number of serious accidents that involved drivers that failed to control their vehicles properly ending up in drains,” Fiji Police Force Director of Traffic and Transport Control (DTTC) Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitilei Divuana said.
SSP Divuana urged drivers to plan trips carefully, rest during long journeys, and prioritise safety, pointing out the availability of Community Posts along highways for rest stops.
Despite the high number of accidents, no fatalities have been recorded this year, compared to two during the same period in 2024.
The school year’s first term begins on January 27.
